NSW: Restrictions on Byron bay New Year revellers
GOLD COAST, Dec 28 AAP - Byron Bay police will leave nothing to chance with more than
20,000 revellers expected to converge on the northern New South Wales township for New Year's
Eve celebrations, acting Inspector Beverley Blanch said today.
Insp Blanch said most people will behave themselves but strategies were in place to prevent
problems associated with past new year celebrations.
"From 7am on New Year's Eve, entry to Byron Bay will be restricted to residents of Byron
Shire or visitors who have pre-booked accommodation," Insp Blanch said in a statement.
"They will have to produce a sticker issued by the Byron Bay Community Safety Committee,
which they can obtain from Byron Shire Council Chambers, Byron Bay Library, Byron Bay Chamber
of Commerce and Byron Visitors Centre.
"For other visitors, vehicles can be parked outside the township with a bus service into
the town operating."
Insp Blanch said last year's crowds in the tourist town were estimated at between 20,000
and 25,000 and a similar number were expected this year.
She said Byron Bay beaches, parks and streets were alcohol-free zones and restrictions on
sales of certain alcohol would also apply during the New Year period.
